Web Systems Engineer

Etna Interactive, a Web development and marketing firm in San Luis Obispo, CA that serves over 300 clients in several sectors of the medical field, is hiring a Web Systems Engineer with at least 3 years of experience who can:

  • Develop Web systems
  • Communicate clearly about complex engineering issues
  • Understand the business case behind the Web systems they develop
  • Code while keeping in mind the implications for interface design and usability
  • Work in a fast-paced environment
  • Take ownership of code bases (i.e. be in control of a client's system)
  • Participate positively with teammates

At our company, the Web Systems Engineer role balances new client system development, existing system refinement, internal system development, and technical advising. This position will support the engineering team by producing quality work within the estimate with a focus on usability and solving the client's needs.

We solve real-world problems for real clients. Our systems are used every day by scores of technical and non- technical people. We are here to serve our clients and make their lives easier with the systems we develop and implement. We do not want any coding prima donnas; we serve our clients - not ourselves.

Employee "fit" is very important. You must be able to communicate clearly (both verbally and in written form), and play nice with others. We are NOT looking for a closet-dwelling code rat that communicates in audio mumblings (think binary solo 001001001). A sense of humor is very important. A balanced lifestyle is also a big plus – there is more to your life than coding.

Since 2002, Etna Interactive has helped clinical practices, hospitals, insurance companies, and medical device manufacturers educate and acquire new patients. Despite the economy, our company is increasingly busy, as the marketing services we provide represent the most viable option for many of our clients to attract new patients and grow their business in a challenging economic landscape.

Key Qualifications:

Because our small firm has made big a name for itself in the medical marketing space, our clients expect and deserve the attention of an experienced professional with:

  • At least 3 years of experience developing Web systems
  • Examples of recent work with URLs and logins (be prepared to demo your work)
  • Extensive knowledge of Web systems/platforms (.NET, php, and/or ColdFusion)
  • Extensive knowledge of SQL (MS SQL and/or mySQL)
  • Working knowledge of HTML/CSS
  • Ability to work within hour estimates
  • Ability to follow specifications
  • Skill in recognizing when "out of depth" and able to "raise the flag" early
  • Skill in demonstrating the functionality of systems and training users
  • An eye for detail and affinity for process

Salary and Benefits:

In addition to the cool office and frequent perks, you'll receive:

  • A base salary most local companies can't touch
  • Employer-paid health care premiums for you and dependents
  • A 401(K) plan with an employer matching component
  • Company-sponsored Long Term Disability Insurance
  • A structured profit sharing plan
  • A progressive paid time off system

There is also the intangible benefit of working in a comfortable, casual environment, surrounded by professionals who are operating at the top of their fields.

To apply, please submit your resume (PDF preferred) online. We will ask the top 5 candidates to complete an at-home skills assessment; 3 will be selected for interview. Please address submissions to Bret Heenan, Director of Engineering.
